Kelly Boen led the 50-lap IMCA Modified main event flag-to-flag Saturday night on Las Vegas Motor Speedway’s 1/2-mile dirt track to collect a $3,000 winner’s purse.
Boen, a native of Henderson, Colo., started on the pole position of the main event after winning his qualifying heat race. More than 80 cars attempted to qualify for one of the 30 available starting spots in the feature event.
“This is about the best facility I have ever seen,” said Boen. “I didn’t decide to come here until two days ago. This is a borrowed engine and borrowed rearend gears. The crew did everything and then asked me to drive. The car is five years old. It is probably the winningest Modified in the world. There are 72 feature wins on this car. It is a pleasure to drive. It is like driving to work when you get in this car.”
Boen, the 1996 Super Nationals Champion, held off several challenges by Brooke Phillips of Wichita, Kan.
The 1986 NASCAR Winston Racing Series National Champion Joe Kosiski, a Omaha, Neb., native, finished third with Jon Thompson, a resident of Superior, Neb., following. Mark Harrison of Coolidge, Ariz., rounded out the top five.
